Snowed In

The forecast said six inches. By ten o’clock Friday night the Northwoods had buried that number twice, and the gravel road down to the cabin had vanished under a smooth white sheet.

“Guess you’re stuck with us,” Daniel said, and he said it the way he’d said everything for the last eight months: lightly, so Claire could hear the want underneath.

Marcus Webb laughed from the hearth, where he was feeding split oak into the fire. Thirty-three, a high school chemistry teacher from Milwaukee, broad through the shoulders in a charcoal thermal that had no business fitting that well. His skin was deep brown and warm in the firelight. He had driven three hours to meet them for dinner and one night. Now there would be at least two.

“I can sleep on the couch,” he said. “We said dinner and see. Nothing’s owed.”

That was why Claire had chosen him. Of all the messages on the lifestyle site, his had been the only one that asked about her limits before it mentioned his own. Three coffee dates. One long video call with Daniel on the line, the three of them laughing about how awkward it was to say yes, that and no, never that out loud. A shared note on Daniel’s phone titled Cabin Rules: condoms, a safe word (Ferndale, the street they’d first lived on), Daniel in the room, and Claire could stop anything with a look.

She was thirty-one and had been married to Daniel for six years. She loved him in the plain, daily way of grocery lists and his hand on her knee at red lights. And for six years he had been quietly, then not so quietly, confessing that what he wanted most was to watch her be wanted by someone else.

“Nothing’s owed,” Claire repeated, and crossed the room to stand in front of Marcus. “But I’d like something.”

Daniel set his whiskey down on the side table. She heard the glass click. She felt his eyes on her back like a hand.

snowed-in cabin; Claire between Daniel and Marcus by the fire

Marcus didn’t rush. He cupped her jaw, thumb on her cheekbone, and looked past her shoulder.

“Dan?”

“Yes,” Daniel said, his voice rough. “God, yes.”

The first kiss was slow enough that Claire forgot to be nervous. Marcus tasted like the red wine from dinner, and his mouth was patient, coaxing, until she opened for him and he made a low sound into her that she felt in her stomach. His hands slid under her sweater, dark fingers spread across the pale small of her back, and she shivered though the fire was hot on her legs.

When she pulled the sweater over her head, Daniel exhaled like he’d been holding that breath for six years.

They moved to the rug. Marcus undressed her the way some men open a letter they’ve waited on—carefully, reading every line. He kissed down her throat, across her collarbone, took one pink nipple into his mouth until she arched off the wool and moaned his name. When he knelt between her knees and spread them, she turned her head and found Daniel in the armchair, leaning forward, elbows on his thighs, eyes black with want.

“Watch,” she whispered to her husband. It came out like a gift.

Marcus put his mouth on her. Slow broad strokes of his tongue, then tight circles, his big hands holding her thighs open against the rug. Claire’s toes curled into the wool. She grabbed at his close-cropped hair, at nothing, her hips rolling up to meet him, and when he slid two thick fingers inside her and curled them, she came hard and fast with a cry that bounced off the pine walls. Her thighs shook around his head. He didn’t stop until she was pushing him away, laughing and gasping.

“Loft,” Marcus said, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand, grinning. “Before I ruin your rug.”

the loft by firelight; Claire in Marcus's arms

The loft was all slanted ceiling and quilts, a single window gone white with snow. Daniel took the armchair at the top of the stairs without being asked. Marcus stood at the foot of the bed and pulled the thermal off, then his jeans, and Claire sat up on her elbows and simply stared.

She had seen photos. They had not prepared her. He was long and heavy and thick, dark against his thigh, the head full and flushed, and when he rolled the condom down it looked stretched to its limit. Her mouth went dry. Behind her, she heard Daniel whisper, “Jesus,” with something close to reverence.

“You okay?” Marcus asked.

“I’m nervous,” she said honestly. “Don’t stop.”

He lay down beside her first and kissed her until she was soft again, then settled between her thighs. She watched it happen—that was the part she would replay for months. The contrast of him against her, deep brown on pale pink, the thick head pressing at her opening, the slow, insistent push. Her breath hitched. Her nails dug into his shoulders.

“Breathe,” he murmured. “Look at me.”

She looked at him. He gave her another inch and the stretch was enormous, a burning fullness that made her eyes water and her mouth fall open, and then something gave and he slid deeper and she moaned so loud Daniel laughed under his breath, shaky and amazed.

“Oh my God,” Claire gasped. “Oh my God, you’re so big.”

“Halfway,” Marcus said, and kissed her as she laughed in disbelief.

He worked into her in slow rolls, a little more each time, until she felt his hips meet hers and she was so full she could barely think. He held still and let her shake. Then he began to move—long, deep strokes, all the way out to the tip and all the way back in, the bed frame creaking in rhythm against the slanted ceiling. Every thrust dragged a sound from her she didn’t recognize. Her heels dug into the backs of his thighs. Her toes curled until they cramped.

“Tell him,” Marcus said low, against her ear. “Tell him how it feels.”

Claire turned her head on the pillow. Daniel had his hand pressed over his jeans, his face flushed, his eyes locked where Marcus disappeared into her.

“It’s so deep, baby,” she panted. “He’s stretching me—I can feel him everywhere—”

Daniel groaned like she’d touched him.

Marcus rolled them so she was on top, guided her down onto him with his big hands on her hips. Gravity took her deeper than she’d thought possible. She braced her palms on his chest, pale fingers spread on dark skin, and rode him slow, then faster, chasing it, her breasts bouncing, her hair falling in her face. He gripped her ass and pulled her down hard on every stroke, and the wet, rhythmic sound of it filled the loft.

The second orgasm built from somewhere behind her navel and broke over her in waves. Her thighs locked and trembled around his hips, her whole body clenching around him, and she heard herself crying out yes, yes, don’t stop while Marcus held her steady and kept fucking her straight through it.

When he finally came, he pulled her down flat against his chest and thrust up deep, three times, groaning into her hair, and she felt him pulse inside her, thick and heavy, and shook all over again.

Afterward, the cabin was so quiet she could hear snow ticking against the glass.

Daniel came to the bed and knelt beside her. He brushed her damp hair back and kissed her, long and grateful, and she tasted the salt on his lips and realized he’d been crying a little.

“Was it okay?” she asked him.

“It was everything,” he said. “You were everything.”

Marcus pulled on his jeans and went downstairs to stoke the fire and give them a minute. That was the other reason she’d chosen him.

morning after; coffee at the frosted window, snow on the pines

In the morning the road was still gone. Daniel made coffee in the French press and handed out mugs, and the three of them stood at the big window in socks and sweatshirts, watching the white pines bow under the weight of the snow.

“Plow won’t come till Sunday,” Marcus said, reading his phone.

Claire leaned back against her husband’s chest. Daniel’s arm came around her waist. She reached her other hand out without looking and found Marcus’s fingers, warm around his mug.

“Good,” she said.

Daniel kissed the top of her head and laughed softly, and she felt the laugh go all the way through him.

There was a whole Saturday left, and nowhere at all to go.
